Unlock Growth Through Email Segmentation - The Ecom Growth Newsletter #46

The Ecom Growth Newsletter #46

Email segmentation is a powerful tool that can help Shopify owners boost their sales and conversions. By segmenting your email list, you can send targeted messages to specific groups of customers, which can result in more sales and higher conversion rates.

Email segmentation can also help Shopify owners avoid the spam folder and ensure that their messages reach the inboxes of their target audience. By understanding your customer's buying patterns, you can create email campaigns that are specifically tailored to their needs.

This week we have a new contributor, Dave Miz from The Email Experience, who will show us how to avoid list fatigue and tap into underutilized segments of your list that will translate into additional revenue for your business!

Let's get into it...

Email Segmentation

Email segmentation is the process of dividing your email list into smaller groups based on certain criteria. This can be done based on purchase history, location, or engagement level.

Actionable

You need to re-think your email segmentation strategy.

I'm telling you this because I think there's a 99.99% chance you're doing the same thing I see many brands do - and I don't want you to lose money like they did.

Chances are, you'll be able to implement what you see here and find “immediate money”.

Here’s why:

Usually, when emailing, you are sending emails to your “engaged” segment.

And hey, I get it.

This is what the “experts” say you’re supposed to do.

You’re getting HORRIBLE advice.

The problem with this advice is… doing this can lead to “list fatigue”.

But it also leads to something else that’s even more concerning…

We see this all the time when doing email audits.

We will create a segment of your email list who has not received any emails in the last 90 days.

And guess what?

The segment is usually HUGE!!

Typically around 15 to 50% of your list.

No emails.

For 3 months!

Ugh.

Does this mean you should ditch your engaged segments and only mail the full list?

ABSOLUTELY NOT.

You're getting absolutely HORRIBLE advice on what matters in email marketing ...and I want to save you a bunch of time and money.

The reality is - Anytime you are mailing the same segment over and over, you’re giving people an opportunity to get left out (while also fatiguing the segment you keep mailing).

How does someone get on that engaged segment if they are never getting any emails from you?

(Hint: They can’t)

In fact, just emailing THAT neglected segment with a well crafted campaign could do wonders for your revenue.

This is very low hanging fruit.

If this is you, you have to explore a new segmentation strategy.

For example, we did an audit last week for an eCommerce brand. Out of a total list of 51,895 - 16,318 have not received an email in the last 90 days.

That’s about 1/3 of their list …

Not receiving any emails for the last 90 days.

Do you think there could be a pocket of money sitting there?

Ummmm … yes.

The reality is having a large chunk of your list with zero emails over 2 to 3 months is a huge concern and red flag.

If this is you right now, I would strongly suggest revisiting your segmentation strategy to combat these issues before it’s too late.

When doing this, you have to think about bringing this email list back into the fold - while still protecting your deliverability, engagement and click rates.

(gotta do all at the same time)

At the very least, your Klaviyo bill is higher than it should be because you’re paying for leads that you’re not mailing.

But there could be a lot of opportunity for revenue generation hiding within the segment.

Hope this helps

Stay awesome!
