Shopify Growth Newsletter #121

Feel like a massive bottleneck for your business? Maybe you should make yourself redundant.
For your business to reach its fullest potential, it needs your direction as a visionary. Which means you need to remove yourself from the day-to-day operations.
That’s where a chief operations officer (COO) comes in.
Hiring the right COO for your business takes a bit more than finding someone with experience. In fact, that’s the last thing you should focus on.
In today’s Deep Dive we take you through the steps of defining your ideal COO and where to find them. So you can work less on your business and allow it to generate more revenue.
Let’s dive in!

Hiring the Superstar Who’s Going to Help You Work Less and Earn More
A COO manages your business while you focus on big-picture growth.
And when you hire the ideal COO, the benefits run through your whole business.
They improve communications between employees and manufacturers, which…
Reduces risk of operational mistakes and financial problems, and…
Increases productivity and operational efficiency, which…
Allows for more strategic business planning and strategy, which…
Boosts profitability.
Hiring the COO that’s an ideal match for your business is key. And their suitability isn’t just about their experience.
Defining the right COO for you
COOs typically work under the CEO. The roles have some similarities that can get mixed, so it’s important to clearly define the responsibilities of each role.
Once you’ve defined these roles you can think about the qualities you need your COO to have to be successful in your business.
There are three main qualities to look out for.
An action person who’s not afraid to challenge you
Some COOs are great strategic thinkers. This is great for operations planning and data gathering, but you need someone who can jump into the frontline and get their hands dirty.
Make sure the COO you hire can get deep into the day-to-day operations and iron out inefficiencies.
By being in the ground work, they’ll be able to challenge your big visionary ideas from a practical viewpoint.
A leader
It’s up to the COO to set clear expectations, provide support where needed, and sit back and let their team work autonomously without micromanaging.
By empowering your team, a COO can foster a culture of trust, collaboration, and accountability, which are essential for long-term success.
Someone who can pick up your slack
The best COO complements your personality and capabilities.
By strengthening your weak areas with a COO, you empower your business to grow.
When you’ve outlined your weaknesses you can start to look for someone who is strong in those areas.
There are people who can help you find your COO
The easiest and probably one of the most effective ways to find a COO is to use a recruitment consultant or agency.
They have the experience and contacts which will shortcut the search process.
VisionSpark is a firm that has been mentioned in ecommerce communities.
A personal consultant can sit with you and help you discover what you really need for your business and situation.
They’ll ask about your business operational needs and the high-level goals and help identify the experience and knowledge requirements of your COO.
Or maybe you already know someone
Training and promoting one of your employees is a great way to mold your own COO. You might have a good idea of someone who could fit the role, but don’t move too hastily.
Personality and skills assessment tests can help you gather some objective data about the candidate. Taking your personal bias out of the equation helps you make a better hire.
The other benefit of hiring internally is you can ease them into the role. As they grow and learn you can give them more responsibilities, instead of putting all of your eggs in one basket with a new hire.
However you decide to hire your COO, just be sure to take some time to clearly define the role and personality qualities so you don’t invest time and energy into the wrong person.
