🔐 Ensure Your FB Ad Account Isn't the Next Hacking Victim
Did you know that hacking cases on Facebook & Instagram are skyrocketing? And let me tell you, these hackers are no rookies – they’re using some really crafty tricks. Let me share a story with you...
Picture this: A company hires a third-party developer to make some tweaks on their Facebook business manager account... Within minutes, disaster strikes.
The developer, not having two-factor authentication, clicks on a phishing link, and boom! The entire account gets hijacked.
By the time Meta wakes up to this, the hackers have splurged $5k and the company’s still waiting to get their account back weeks later.
Does that send chills down your spine? Well unfortunately, this isn’t an isolated incident.
But here’s the silver lining: Most hacks can be stopped dead in their tracks with just three security checks.

The Deep Dive
Hacking on Facebook & Instagram is rising, and hackers’ new tricks are extremely deceptive.
So let’s go over three simple but powerful security checks to make sure you are the owner of your Meta business manager account and it is safe and secure…
Security Check 1: Own Your Meta Account. No Exceptions
Whoever owns the card on file should be the owner and admin of the Meta account. Period.
Think of it as guarding the keys to your kingdom...
As a general rule of thumb, a brand should own their account and add an Agency as a partner, not an admin.
Some agencies create their own accounts and run their client's ads through these accounts they own. This is highly not recommended and risky for business owners.
While there are legitimate reasons to do this, such as a brand has a shutdown ad account and can’t create more, it should be avoided whenever possible. Some agencies have done this as a measure of control, to hide performance and this is against the business’s best interests.
If a company’s card is on file, the agency (or hackers) can remove their access if they own the account and still retain control of a client's card.
🔐 Quick Tip:
To check if you are the admin on your own ad account: Log into your personal Facebook account and open business.facebook.com.
Under business settings: you can check and adjust who has access.
Having two admins with at least one as a backup is recommended. Agencies or partners should be added with partner access, not as a person, owner, or admin.
As the company owner, ensure you have admin access. If you upgrade anyone to an admin, downgrade them once they finish the work performed.
Security Check 2: Get That Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) Up & Running!
If you’ve got the front door locked, this is like adding a security system.
So…once you control how many admins have access, you’ll want to ensure you have two-factor authentication turned on for your personal Facebook, Instagram, and business manager.
🔐 Quick Tip:
There is a recommended option in business manager settings > security: to require all people in a business manager account to have 2FA on.
This will also require all future admins who are added.
Activate 2FA for your personal Facebook, Instagram, and business manager accounts. Go the extra mile and make sure everyone with access has 2FA switched on.
Security Check 3: Know The Hacker's Game to Beat Them at It
Knowing how hackers strike will help anyone with access identify when they are in danger. It is important that everyone with access knows hackers’ common tricks.
For example, if a wife runs an online store and her husband is added as a backup admin, it would be important to educate him. This way, a simple login attempt doesn’t turn into a hack.
The most common way businesses get hacked is a message pretending to be Facebook that says your page or ad account has been disabled and asks you to appeal it within 24 hours.
You are then directed to a page that looks like Facebook, where you are asked to enter your password, but it’s a phishing page, just like the case study above. Once someone enters their password, they are typically kicked out within minutes.
⚠️ Red Flags to Look Out For:
Unexpected messages about your account/page being in violation.
Any prompt to enter your password unless you're 100% sure of the platform's authenticity.
Crafty display links with hidden malicious hyperlinks.
Messages from "Meta Support Team" accounts that aren't verified.
In Summary…
By knowing each admin that has access to your business manager account, turning on Two Factor Authentication for all Facebook, Business Manager & Instagram accounts, and educating each admin with access about the common tricks of hackers, you will safeguard your account from the most common hacks.
