The Deep Dive

Simple ways to leverage your data for e-commerce wins

As a Shopify store owner, you are constantly inundated with data, so the real challenge isn't collecting it, but turning those numbers into actionable insights.

This week, we're going over how to use your store’s analytics to uncover those valuable nuggets of wisdom that can propel your Shopify store to new heights—with no costly tools or advanced degrees required.

The Starting Point

Understanding the data from your Shopify store begins with a simple yet profound question:

What problem do you exactly seek to understand?

Is it the growth, or decrease in your web traffic, customer engagement, or the effectiveness of your latest marketing efforts?

Think of your analytics as an..unsolved mystery.

(admit it, you read that in Robert Stack’s voice didn’t you? lol)

One insightful question often leads to another, unveiling deeper layers of clues, leading to an understanding of the culprit and eventually - you solve the mystery behind the who, what, when, where - allowing you to move accordingly.

Starting without a clear question, however, can leave you lost without a compass, or flashlight in a dark forest, running in circles trying to figure out where to go next….and we don’t want that!

Here are some example questions you can use to jog your brain:

  • Have our landing pages seen more traffic recently?

  • What percentage of our visitors fill their carts but never proceed to checkout?

  • At what stage are we losing potential customers during their checkout journey?

  • Do our social media-driven visitors show a higher propensity to purchase than those coming from email marketing efforts?

  • What impact did introducing a website pop-up two months ago have on our conversion rates?

  • What behaviors are predominant among visitors on our shop page?

  • Was the investment in last month's Google Ads campaign justified by its return?

Once you have a list of questions like this, the next step is to gather pertinent data across all platforms influencing your store's performance.

Gathering The Data: Your Insights Review

As you know, your store’s data is your roadmap to deciphering customer behavior, evaluating web traffic trends, and product insights.

Google Analytics, of course, is a go-to resource for accessing your information, however, the standard suite of analytics tools might not suffice for those seeking more in-depth insights.

Avoid basing your strategic decisions on a fragmented view of your data and you will find that there is much more information available by combining methods and tools.

Here are some example ideas you can use in order to obtain a comprehensive analysis:

  • Activate Enhanced E-commerce tracking in Google Analytics to monitor detailed product interaction stages.

  • Creating custom events within Google Analytics for tracking nuanced actions like newsletter signups.

  • Tailor your Facebook Ads columns to evaluate ad exposure frequency and/or cost-effectiveness.

  • Generate Shopify custom reports to identify trends in product returns.

  • Employ heatmap tools such as Hotjar or Lucky Orange to visualize how visitors interact with your product pages.

Now, with your data in hand, it's time to assess, validate, and implement strategic moves!

Moving forward, we will break down ways you can use your data in hypothetical situations with Store X, showing examples of capturing missed opportunities, and turning them into more revenue.

Optimizing Ad Strategies with Purchase Data

Analyzing the effectiveness of different aspects of your business is crucial for growth.

For example…

After using data gained from their marketing efforts, Store X was able to identify why conversion rates significantly increased for first time buyers.

They noticed that it was due to one specific product ad, then adjusted their strategy and reallocated funds towards driving more traffic to this ad instead.

They made this decision confidently based on the clear understanding of their insights, and what directly influenced new buyers. It allowed them to make informed decisions, ensuring that any adjustments made are beneficial and based on customers behavior.

Refining Conversion Strategies Through Product Placement

Diversity in your product offerings is needed, but it can also complicate the purchasing decision for customers.

Store X also did an analysis on their website traffic to further refine and assess why conversions were going better with their marketing efforts, yet conversions were getting worse when it came to website visits.

They found it decreased due to new product placements on their homepage.

Upon review of their heatmap data, it was discovered that customers were more interested in exploring individual products before considering their product bundles (which were featured). In the past, using individual products had successfully increased customer conversions.

So, based on this insight, they repositioned their bundles, which resulted in an improved conversion rate on the homepage page by nearly 20%.

Improving Inventory Management Using Average Order Value (AOV) Insights

Fluctuations in your average order value (AOV) metrics can signal underlying issues.

When Store X experienced a decrease in AOV, they examined their interconnected metrics to identify the root causes of the change and found that the overall product sales decreased due to a key product, which was currently out of stock.

Recognizing the demand for this product, getting it back in stock became a priority. They also decided to make a strategic move and increase their inventory order from the vendor in the future.

By doing this, they expected to not only recover sales momentum, but also enhance customer retention by meeting demand effectively.

Leveraging Your E-commerce Insights

Turning your data into action doesn't require esoteric knowledge or expensive software—it demands curiosity, a strategic framework, and the willingness to ask, "What's really happening?"

These examples show practical applications you can use with your insights in order to make improvements, save costs and increase revenue in various areas. From leveraging marketing data to refine advertisements strategies and adjusting product placement for better conversion rates to using insights from AOV for informed inventory decisions, the focus is on making data-driven adjustments for better outcomes.

Wrapping Up!

Until next time, keep turning those analytics into your stepping stones.

The magic isn't just in the numbers, but in how you use them to illuminate the path ahead. Dive deep, uncover those insights, and watch your empire flourish. As the insightful Peter Drucker once put it,

"What gets measured gets managed."

And, armed with your analytics, you'll be charting a course to undiscovered treasures in no time!
